The requirements for steel pipes in the oil & gas and chemical industry are exceptionally high. Valuable and in most cases corrosive liquids and gases are transported over long distances and many years, not seldom in harsh environments.

Steel pipes in offshore exploration are of central importance as they are used for the transport of oil, gas and other energy resources in extreme environments. The conditions at the deep sea bed are extreme. High pressure, heavy tides and flow, seawater corrosion and corrosive hydrocarbons.

Offshore steel pipes are often used in risers and flowlines which connect the drilling hole at the sea bed with platforms or Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessels. Because of the extreme requirements on pressure and corrosion resistance those pipes are produced from hot rolled bonded clad plates. The clad plates consist of a heavy wall carrier plate with thin high corrosion resistant Nickel alloy layer hot rolled in the steel mill. A cost efficient alternative is the new patented mechanically lined RollClad® MLP.
