Steel pipes for the offshore industry

Faraway of the world’s shores they rise out of the waters: Steel giants which are indispensable for our daily routine. It is about drilling and oil platforms, offshore wind mills and offshore substations. They serve us with energy for our daily live. Less monumental are fish farms or tidal power plants. In order to anchor all these constructions safely in the sea ground and ensure longevity and high efficient operation premium steel components are necessary. High strength steel pipes made from X100Q or S690Q are used in marine installations and on board of vessels.

Steel pipes are of central importance in the offshore industry as they are used for the exploration and transport of oil, gas and other resources under extreme environments. The conditions at the sea bed are extreme: High pressure. Strong currents, seawater corrosion risk and corrosive hydrocarbons. Offshore steel pipes are often used in risers and flowlines which connect the drilling hole at the sea bed with platforms or Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessels. Because of the extreme requirements on pressure and corrosion resistance those pipes are produced from hot rolled bonded clad plates. The clad plates consist of a heavy wall carrier plate with thin high corrosion resistant Nickel alloy layer hot rolled in the steel mill.

Also foundations of offshore platforms and offshore wind parks with their giant mills need strong steel components. Huge monopiles are rammed into the sea bed in order to stabilize the platforms or offshore wind mills. Those pipes do not only have to resist high mechanical loads but also extreme weather conditions and sea water currents. Corrosion protection and fatigue resistance play here again a central role.
